Why FFS packaging consisting of PE/PA is an issue within PPWR

The new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) legislation is forcing companies to switch to recyclable packaging. Multilayer laminates composed of polyethylene (PE) and polyamide (PA) are therefore becoming less and less attractive, as they do not meet recycling standards and stand in the way of the circular economy. But why exactly do these packages pose a problem? And what are the best sustainable alternatives? In this article, we explain.

How multilayer laminates composed of PE and PA fail to meet PPWR recycling standards

Laminates with polyamide (PA) are often used because of their strength, barrier properties and glossy appearance. However, they consist of multiple layers of material, such as a combination of polyamide (PA), polyethylene (PE) and sometimes aluminium (AL).

Why are these packages not future-proof?

  • Not recyclable: The different material types are difficult to separate, making them unsuitable for standard recycling streams.
  • High environmental impact: Multilayer packaging often ends up as residual waste and is incinerated or landfilled, hindering the circular economy.
  • New regulations: From 2030, only recyclable packaging should enter the EU market.
  • Decrease in market acceptance: Retailers and manufacturers are increasingly looking for PPWR-compliant alternatives to meet the stricter requirements.

These developments are forcing companies to look for more sustainable packaging solutions.

Alternatives: Mono-PE packaging with optional EVOH barrier

One of the best solutions is to switch to mono-PE packaging, which combines recyclability with strength and a high-quality appearance.

  • Fully recyclable: Mono-PE packaging can be recycled within existing waste streams after use.
  • Optional EVOH barrier: For products requiring additional barrier, a thin EVOH layer can be added without losing recyclability.
  • Strong and shiny: Contrary to popular belief, mono-PE film can be just as sturdy and visually appealing as traditional laminate.
  • Proven in practice: Bonduelle has already successfully switched from multilayer laminates to recyclable mono-PE packaging, without compromising on branding and product quality.

By choosing mono-PE packaging, companies make their packaging future-proof and meet the new legislation without sacrificing functionality.
