HDPE, like all types of 'virgin' plastic, is made from oil. It is therefore also not biodegradable or compostable (read more about these topics on the page: What are bioplastics?). HDPE-film is, however, eminently recyclable. For high-quality recycling into A-class materials, it must meet a number of conditions:
- The film should consist of one type of material, i.e. not laminated with other materials such as aluminium.
- The film should not be too contaminated.
- The film must be separately collected or post-separated
Recycling of films can be encouraged by designing more products from a material and by collecting clean streams separately on a larger scale.
