Disposal guide: everything you need to know about waste separation on packaging

Want to dispose of packaging waste properly? Then the Discard symbols you with this. These waste separation logos indicate directly in which bin each part of a packaging belongs - think plastic, paper, residual waste or glass.

At KIVO, we think it is important to contribute to better waste separation and recycling. Therefore, we have conveniently listed all the Weggooiwijzer logos for you in this article.

What is the Discard Guide?

The Disposal Guide is a visual aid on packaging that shows consumers how to dispose of packaging materials. The system was developed by the Sustainable Packaging Knowledge Institute (KIDV) and is specifically intended for the Dutch market.

Each package often consists of several components, such as a film, label or cap. The Disposal Guide shows for each component which waste it belongs to. This promotes correct waste separation and contributes to a better recycling process.

Why are discard symbols important?

Research shows that consumers are willing to separate their waste, but often do not know which bin a packaging belongs in. By adding Throw-away logos to packaging:

  • Encourage proper waste separation,
  • support a circular economy,
  • and make the recycling process more efficient.

In addition, as a producer, you show that you are aware of sustainable packaging.

Note: the logos only indicate where the packaging should be thrown away - they say nothing about the recyclability itself. Want to know if a package is recyclable? Then use the KIDV Recyclecheck.

Disposal guide combined with recyclable packaging

The discard symbols are an important part of sustainable packaging design, but they don't solve everything. You make the real impact by also opting for recyclable packaging, such as mono-PE films from KIVO. These are fully recyclable and can easily be labelled with the appropriate waste separation symbols.
